How the Waldfrieden crew describe their set-up:

Waldfrieden is best known for its annual large open-air festivals “Wonderland” and “Hai in den Mai”. The popular and individually decorated club in the “Waldfrieden-Haus” is used for these occasions. If the weather is nice, you can dance outside on the sand of the Backyard Outdoor Floor until the early hours of the morning. The second, larger open-air trance floor is used exclusively for dancing for the two festivals “Hai in den Mai” and “Wonderland”.

The area around the “Waldfrieden-Haus” invites you to explore with small and large surprises, such as the popular viewless tower with a slide, and with its many small cozy corners and the large meadow on the slope to chill out and enjoy nature. Some elevated tree platforms can also be found for enjoying the scenery. There is a fairytale beech forest around the Waldfrieden area, which is perfect for long walks all the way to Lemförde.

Care is always taken to ensure that work is carried out as economically and sustainably as possible. The counters, platforms and benches are built from the forest's beech trees, the flyers are printed from recycled paper and green electricity is purchased.

Through thousands of years our shaman ancestors came to the realization that if we organize the calm frequency of nature into a monotonous, neatly comprehensible pulsating rhythm played on drums, then the state of flow that lies deep within all of us becomes more accessible, and we can fully arrive to the present moment. In this state of mind we become able to develop a soft and slow attention in which we can move and feel the entirerity of our whole self. At such times we breathe together with our traumas and with everything that are less and less accessible due to the noise of our rushing everydays. We connect to an internal axis, where our “higher self” receives better access to these forgotten realms inside us.

In such a state of conscious presence, we become our own healers.

“Manas” (Sanskrit for “mind”) is more accurately translated in Indian philosophy as the human “consciousness,” which receives the impressions of our senses and organizes them before they reach our waking consciousness. Following this ideology of the festival’s namesake, we embark on our mission to help bridge the gap between peak experience and everyday life.

Therefore, even within the festival area, we ensure that effective tools, a peaceful space and experienced helpers are available to everyone, in an environment where nature is protected with the same care as those who walk on it.

A journey, by the end of which it becomes clear that what we found was not a mystical miracle, but merely the present moment.

What Beat Herder say about their festival:

Beat-Herder is different to other festivals; it is built on unconditional love and the tireless efforts of many. From plants grown from seed, hand painted signs and flags, restoring old cars, to homemade hymn books; the detail and creativity is endless. Most of the stuff you will see here is unique to Beat-Herder. Like most things at Beat-Herder, ideas begin with a crude sketch on a fag packet. We then get out a roll of brown wrapping paper, tape to a table and begin scrawling random ideas, words and pictures. We did this 20 years ago whilst conjuring up the name for the festival and, after hours of scrawl, we all knew when Beat-Herder was written that it was the right name.
