Science of Psychedelics

The Science of Psychedelics with Dr Sam Gandy

What Seed Talks are saying about their upcoming event:

Psychedelics are having a moment, with a research renaissance exploring their effects and potential in full swing. While these substances have been used as agents of healing and divination in a shamanic and spiritual context by some indigenous cultures for many centuries, their intersection with Western culture is much more recent. Psychedelics have a tumultuous history, with an initial wave of scientific research into their potential being cut short by a vicious countercultural backlash in the 1960’s, although scientific research is once again picking up pace.

While psilocybin has taken centre stage in this modern research revival, other psychedelics such as LSD, ayahuasca, DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are also gaining increasing scientific attention. What has research revealed about how psychedelics impart their powerful effects on the human psyche? And what promise might psychedelics hold in the treatment of various mental health afflictions, and the betterment of well people?

In this interesting talk, you will learn about how psilocybin imparts its powerful effects on the human psyche. You will also hear how it might treat depression, addiction and other mental health conditions, and potentially lead to the betterment of well people?

Mind At Large

What the organisers are saying about Mind At Large Conference:

The Mind at Large Project is a three-year conference series, with associated film and other media, that investigates consciousness and its role in reality. The project seeks to challenge the common yet unnecessarily-restrictive worldview that posits that brains alone are required for consciousness. We seek to expand to a broader ‘mind-at-large’ set of theories by exploring mind’s presence across various scales, from quantum physics to ecosystems to the cosmos as a whole. This is a multidisciplinary project though anchored in Philosophy, looking at ideas including panpsychism, pantheism, 4E cognition, questions of AI and plant sentience, animism, perspectivism, idealism—as well as certain associated extraordinary phenomenologies such as those found in psychedelic states or paranormal phenomena.

Prepare for the new paradigm.

To help imagine and shape that future, we welcome speakers with wide-ranging expertise and lived experience to deliver short talks and two panel discussions - one focusing on medical psychedelics and the other on personal and community practice.

Science Of Psychedelics

The Science of Psychedelics with Dr. David Luke

What Seed Talks are saying about their upcoming event:

The traditional use of psychoactive plants and fungi for spiritual and shamanic rituals has occurred for thousands of years, whereas the Western scientific research of these substances has only been explored in the last 100 years, and prohibition stalled the last 50 years of this.

In this talk you will be introduced to the science of these traditional psychedelics along with their modern counterparts first synthesised in the 20th century. Dr. Luke will also touch upon the mental health applications for these drugs.

Now that scientific research is resuming, what do psychedelics tell us about the weirder side of human consciousness, and what can be learned from the traditional shamanic practices with these substances? Find this out and more in this enlightening talk.

PsySoc Social

PsySoc Social: Speed-friending and Psychedelic Storytelling

What The Psychedelic Society are saying about their upcoming event:

Psychedelic Speed-friending: sweet conversation, friend-making and (maybe?) finding your future lover! You can drop the small talk and ask the questions you REALLY want to ask. Taking inspiration from the 36 Questions to Intimacy and The School of Life's '100 Questions,' this evening gives you a menu of profound, intriguing, and spicy questions designed to inspire authenticity and meaningful connection with those around you. You’ll be guided through playful icebreakers and a series of 10-minute one-on-one conversations with different people throughout the evening, wrapping up with free-flowing socialising. You’ll leave here with a fresh perspective on connection, some fun stories, and maybe even the beginning of something special.

Psychedelic Storytelling: This is becoming a must for our monthly socials. There will be the opportunity for all of us to share our psychedelic stories - the weird, the tricky and the downright wonderful. This part of the evening will be open-mic style, and we will have a sign-up sheet to add your name to the list of storytellers. Your stories should be no more than 5 minutes, and there's no need to rehearse what to say or come particularly prepared - often the best stories are told off-the-cuff and from the heart!

Once the room’s warmed up and hearts are open, we shift into Psychedelic Storytelling, our beloved open mic session where you get the chance to take the stage. Share your story, whether it’s strange, tender, funny, or downright mystical. There’s no need to be polished or profound, just honest. Stories are 5 minutes max, and you can sign up on the night.

Trip Sitting

What The Psychedelic Society are saying about their upcoming event:

Join us for a mystical journey into the art of Trip Sitting and an accesible and practical guide to setting up ceremony and ritual for the psychedelic journeyer.

Julian Vayne draws on over a decade of experience, this event explores the inner journey — reminding us that “the drama is internal” — and offers grounded ways to support others through psychedelic experiences.

The session will cover the bare essentials of ceremony and care: ethical considerations, practical guidelines, music curation, and how to be present during challenging moments, both during and after a journey. We’ll look at how vulnerability and care create conditions for healing, and how the ethics of care and cultivation of virtue can shape this work.

Strange Attractor

'Strange Attractor: The Hallucinatory Life of Terence McKenna' - Book signing + talk with the author Graham St John

What BASE Crew are saying about their upcoming event:

Terence McKenna (1946-2000) was the 20th century’s psychedelic renaissance man. More than twenty-five years since his untimely passing, across the virtual popstream and in networked communities dedicated to his “small mouth noises,” McKenna’s magnetism endures. As the first biography of this stand-up philosopher, rogue scholar, and surreal oracle, Strange Attractor detects the signal behind the noise.

Accessing original documents and letters, featuring rare photographs and artworks, sharing previously untold stories from over eighty people, Strange Attractor chronicles one of the most celebrated and yet least understood figures of the late twentieth century. Neither exalting nor condemning its subject, it documents the evolution of an altered statesman whose mellifluous voice affected multitudes and continues to haunt the present.

Join us at BASE autonomous social centre in Easton for the UK release of Strange Attractor, with the author, Graham St John. Cafe is open for vegan dinner and dessert from 6pm. Talk starts at 7pm. Graham will have copies available at BASE on the night for sale and signing, and we'll have a relaxed evening with music and food. Come by for our regular Sunday Cafe night and enjoy the presentation and atmosphere.

Science of Psychedelics

The Science of Psychedelics with Dr Sam Gandy

What Seed Talks are saying about their event:

Drug Checking

What The Loop say about their monthly drug-checking service:

The Loop's regular drug checking service, the first in the UK, takes place every last Saturday of the month in Bristol. The Loop team, chemists and healthcare staff, complete drug testing in our mobile laboratory and provide harm reduction advice and consultations informed by the testing of submitted substances. Everyone is welcome to use the service and to drop-in to meet and speak with The Loop.

Members of the public can submit a substance for testing at Bristol Drug Project in Brunswick Square (look for the pink door). This is an anonymous service and no name needs to be provided. A brief assessment, related to the use of the submitted drug will be completed, and this informs the information that can be shared following the laboratory testing. This all takes place within an hour of submitting the substance, and there is an opportunity to speak openly and receive non-judgmental and factual information regarding drugs and harm reduction advice with a member of The Loop's healthcare team. Where there is a dependency on the submitted substance we are able to support people in engaging and receiving further services, accessing support and treatment.
